Boinc Threat Alert

We chanced upon a bit of a strange position in our investigation. A trojan masks itself as a reliable tool. Such a thing isn’t new – protection malicious software do it all the time, particularly trojans, which is what’s occurring here. What’s new here is that the Boinc infections (as we shall call it) isn’t a reliable malware that advertises itself as Boinc –  relatively it illegally sets up Boinc on a pc and makes use of it. It’s an unknown condition where the sole identifier for the malware is a application we can’t terribly responsibility.

We prepared to highlight this here. We don’t assert the “real” Boinc is a malicious software. Something else is through it, and that something is damaging.

Learn how to remove Boinc from your computer

Step 1. Boinc Removal from Windows

a) Windows 7/XP

  1. Press on the Start icon. win7-start Boinc Threat Alert

b) Windows 8

c) Windows 10

  1. Open Start menu and click on the magnifying glass (next to the shut down button). win10-start2 Boinc Threat Alert

d) Mac OS X

  1. Open Finder and press Applications. mac-os-apps Boinc Threat Alert
  2. Check all suspicious programs you want to get rid of.
  3. Drag them to the trash icon in your dock (Alternatively, right-click on the program and press Move to Trash). mac-os-app-delete Boinc Threat Alert
  4. After you move all the unwanted programs, right-click on the trash icon and select Empty Trash.

Step 2. Delete Boinc from browsers

a) Remove Boinc from Microsoft Edge

Reset Microsoft Edge (Method 1)
  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Press More located at the top right corner of the screen (the three dots). edge-menu Boinc Threat Alert

  4. Check the boxes of the items you want removed, and press Clear. edge-clear-data Boinc Threat Alert
  5. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete together.
  6. Choose Task Manager.
  7. In the Processes tab, find the Microsoft Edge process, right click on it, and press Go to details (or More details if Go to details is not available). task-manager Boinc Threat Alert
  8. Right-click on all Microsoft Edge processes, and choose End task.
(Method 2)
Before you proceed with this method, backup your data.
  1. Go to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_xxxxxxxxxx.
  2. Select all the folders, right-click on them and press Delete. edge-folder Boinc Threat Alert
  3. Press the start button, and type in Windows PowerShell in the search box.
  4. Right-click on the result, and select Run as administrator. edge-powershell Boinc Threat Alert
  5. In Administrator: Windows PowerShell, paste Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml -Verbose} under PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> and tap Enter. edge-powershell-script Boinc Threat Alert
  6. The issue should be gone now.

b) Remove Boinc from Internet Explorer

  1. Open Internet Explorer and press on the Gear icon. IE-gear Boinc Threat Alert
  2. Select Manage add-ons, and then Toolbars and Extensions.
  3. Find and disable all suspicious extensions. IE-add-ons Boinc Threat Alert
  4. Close the window.

c) Restore your homepage on Internet Explorer

  1. Open Internet Explorer and press on the Gear icon.
  2. Internet Options → General tab. Delete the homepage URL and type in your preferred one. IE-settings2 Boinc Threat Alert
  3. Press Apply.

d) Reset Internet Explorer

  1. Open Internet Explorer and press on the Gear icon. ie-settings Boinc Threat Alert
  2. Internet Options → Advanced tab. ie-settings-advanced Boinc Threat Alert
  3. At the bottom, you will see a Reset button. Press that.
  4. In the window that appears, check the box that says Delete personal settings. IE-reset Boinc Threat Alert
  5. Press Reset.
  6. Click OK to exit the window.
  7. Restart your browser.

e) Remove Boinc from Google Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome and press the menu icon on the right, next to the URL field.

  3. Remove suspicious extensions by clicking the Trash icon next to them. chrome-extensions-delete Boinc Threat Alert
  4. If you are not certain about an extension, you can disable it by unchecking the box that says Enabled. If you later decide to keep it, simply check the box again.

f) Restore your homepage on Google Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome and press the menu icon on the right, next to the URL field.

  3. In the window that appears, under On startup, there will be a Set pages option. Press on that.
  4. Remove the set website, and type in the one you prefer to be your homepage. Press OK. chrome-startup-page Boinc Threat Alert
  5. In Settings, under Search, there is a Manage search engines option. Select that. chrome-search-engines Boinc Threat Alert
  6. Remove all search engines except the one you want to use. Click Done.

g) Reset Google Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome and press the menu icon on the right, next to the URL field.

  4. Find and press the Reset button. chrome-reset Boinc Threat Alert
  5. In the confirmation window that appears, press Reset.

h) Remove Boinc from Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox and access the menu by clicking on the three bars on the right of the screen.

  4. If you are not certain about an extension, you can disable it by clicking Disable. If you later decide to keep it, simply press Enable.

i) Restore your homepage on Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox and access the menu by clicking on the three bars on the right side of the screen.

j) Reset Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox and access the menu by clicking on the three bars on the right of the screen.
  2. Press the question mark at the bottom of the menu.

k) Remove Boinc from Safari (for Mac)

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Select Preferences (can be accesses by pressing on Safari at the top of your screen). safari-menu Boinc Threat Alert
  3. Choose the Extensions tab.
  4. Uninstall all questionable extensions. safari-extensions Boinc Threat Alert
  5. If you are not certain about an extension, you can disable it by unchecking the box that says Enabled. If you later decide to keep it, simply check the box again.

l) Reset Safari

If you are using the Yosemite, El Capitan or the Sierra versions, the option to reset Safari with one click is not available. Thus you will have to clear the history and empty the caches in separate steps.
  1. Open Safari.
  2. Select Clear History (can be accesses by pressing on Safari at the top of your screen). safari-clear-history Boinc Threat Alert

  4. Press on Safari at the top of the screen and select Preferences. safari-advanced Boinc Threat Alert
  5. Select the Advanced tab and check the box next to Show Develop menu in menu bar.

  7. Press Empty Caches.
If for some reason you are unable to remove the extensions or reset your browsers, it may be a good idea to obtain anti-spyware software and have it deal with the problem.
